How to Calculate Gravel for a Trench

Trench gravel calculations require three measurements: total trench length, trench width, and the depth of gravel fill. For pipe bedding, you typically fill only the bottom portion of the trench with gravel.

Plan for Compaction

Gravel pipe bedding is NOT compacted (to avoid pipe damage). Trench backfill above the pipe is compacted in lifts. Add 10–15% for uncompacted estimates.

Match Gravel to Pipe Type

Use pea gravel or 3/8" crushed stone for PVC and HDPE pipes. Larger stone can damage flexible pipe walls. For concrete and iron pipe, #57 stone is fine.

Use Filter Fabric for Drainage

Line drainage trenches with filter fabric before adding gravel to prevent soil infiltration. Overlap fabric edges by 12 inches at the top.

Minimum Cover Depths

Water supply lines need at least 12 inches of gravel/soil cover to prevent freezing (more in cold climates). Sewer lines need 24 inches minimum cover in high-traffic areas.

How much gravel do I need for pipe bedding in a trench?

For a standard 4-inch pipe in a 24-inch wide × 36-inch deep trench, you need about 6 inches of bedding below the pipe and 6 inches of cover above: Total gravel depth = ~12–18 inches within the trench. For a 100-foot trench: 100 × 2 × 1.25 ft = 250 ft³ = 9.26 cubic yards ≈ 13 tons.

What type of gravel is used for pipe bedding?

1/4"–3/4" clean, washed crushed stone (#57 or #67) is the most common pipe bedding material. It provides stable support without sharp points that could damage flexible pipes. Pea gravel (3/8") is also popular for PVC pipe. Avoid materials with fines (crusher run) as they can shift when wet.

How wide should a trench be for a 4-inch drain pipe?

The minimum trench width for a 4-inch pipe should be 12–18 inches (pipe OD plus 4 inches on each side). Wider trenches (18–24 inches) make installation easier and provide better drainage capacity in the surrounding gravel. OSHA also requires trench widths that allow safe worker access for deep excavations.

Do I compact gravel around buried pipes?

No — the initial bedding and gravel immediately surrounding the pipe (the "pipe zone") should NOT be mechanically compacted, as this can distort or crack flexible pipes. Compact only the backfill material above the pipe zone (typically starting 12 inches above the pipe crown). Compact in 6-inch lifts using a hand tamper near the pipe.

How do I calculate cubic yards for a trench?

Formula: Cubic Yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Example: A trench 80 ft long × 1.5 ft wide × 2 ft deep = (80 × 1.5 × 2) ÷ 27 = 240 ÷ 27 = 8.89 cubic yards. For weight, multiply cubic yards by 1.4 (tons per cubic yard for typical gravel).

What is the difference between trench gravel and pipe bedding gravel?

Pipe bedding gravel is specifically clean, washed, uniform stone (1/4"–3/4") used directly around a pipe for structural support and drainage. Trench backfill gravel can be coarser, less expensive compactable fill (crusher run, bank gravel) used above the pipe zone to restore grade. Different specs apply to each zone of the trench fill.
